Ubuntu Sound Problems on Dell Studio

July 22, 2009 by Naman Bagga | 11 Comments | Filed in Linux, Tech Talk

I started installing Linux on my Dell Studio 1555 as soon as I got it and checked that everything was alright. I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 initially. I had issues with installing drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570. The OpenSUSE wiki said that its drivers had no Linux version. I tried different methods but the drivers just refused to work. Actually the problem is that ATI is gradually making its drivers open source and getting rid of the proprietary drivers. I was on the verge of believing that I had no option but to wait for the release of the Linux drivers and use Windows till then. That was a very bad feeling. Then I thought about giving Ubuntu a try. The proprietary FGLRX driver worked perfectly well with Ubuntu.

I installed Ubuntu and everything seemed to be alright initially. After a while, I realized that there was a problem with sound. In fact, I was getting no sound. I searched the Ubuntu forums and found a simple solution to the issue. Here's how to solve the no-sound problem in Ubuntu on Dell Studio.

You just need to edit the alsa-base.conf file. To do that run this command in the terminal-

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Then add this line to the file-

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

Save the file and restart your laptop. This should solve the problem. You should start getting sound now.

My First Post From Hostel

July 21, 2009 by Naman Bagga | No Comments | Filed in General, MANIT Bhopal

I know the title sounds a bit lame but I guess I'm just trying to get into the blogging mood which is tough to do in a hostel where almost nobody shares similar interests. People who are following me on twitter, would've read a couple of tweets regarding hostel allotment and stuff. Here's the complete story of what I did in the last week or so.

I reached Bhopal on 12th July. My college classes started on 13th, as scheduled. The only problem was that the hostel allotment for 2nd year hadn't been done. I was staying in the Faculty Guest House(no LAN :-( ), waiting for the hostel allotment. Here's what the hostel scene in MANIT Bhopal is like. The intake in the 1st year is increasing every year but the college has failed to build new hostels in time to accommodate everyone. There are two hostels for 2nd year boys, Hostel No. 3 and 4. Hostel No. 4 is completely for 2nd year and Hostel No.3 was originally supposed to be for Post-Graduation students but now is shared between 2nd year, 3rd year and PG students. The college director has changed so the decision regarding the number of rooms to be alloted to the 2nd year in Hostel No. 3 could not be made on time. Hostel No.4 was alloted on 13th July according to merit but surprisingly there was a SC/ST quota too. I missed getting a room in H4 by a few ranks. Then it was time for allotment in H3. I missed quite a few classes trying to get a room in the hostel. On 16th, the new director Mr. R.P. Singh, passed an order saying that PG students would no longer be alloted the Hostel No.3. This solved the hostel problem for pretty much everyone. The allotment list for Hostel No.3 was out on 17th July and I shifted to my room yesterday, i.e 20th July.

So, I'm well settled now, ready to blog, tweet and obviously, study.

Learn.com Personal Edition

July 11, 2009 by Naman Bagga | No Comments | Filed in Education

Learn.com is an Elearning solutions company. It provides a single integrated platform for people seeking skill improvement and people looking to employ people. Learn.com was earlier limited to corporate training for small / large firms but recently Learn.com Personal Edition was launched. It focuses on training individuals in specific skills. Learn.com offers various courses based on your job profile that can help you excel in your field and gain an edge over your competitors. Almost any course can get you a job but only a good course can get you a promotion.

Learn.com Personal Edition also offers many free courses for individuals. I decided to try a couple of courses which are a necessity for almost every job. Microsoft Office Word 2007 Fundamentals and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 Fundamentals are the ones I tried. Registration was short and simple with just a handful of mandatory fields. These courses emphasized on the very basics of the two widely used Microsoft Office applications. In this age, knowing the basics of Microsoft Office, can make you eligible for many kinds of jobs. These courses will definitely help you get a job. The idea is really nice and I would recommend it to people who are looking for an Elearning solution to improve their job skills.

If I were you, I would at least register for a free account and try a couple of free courses(which I've already done).
