Facebook Phishing Scam

May 27th, 2009 by Naman Bagga | 3 Comments | Filed in General, Tech Talk

A Phishing website, in simple layman language is a site that just looks some popular site to extract people's login information. Recently, I came across a phishing scam on Facebook. I received a message from a friend that said-

Check out ******.be

I've not mentioned the URL because I know many people will check it out if I mention it on my blog. I checked the site on Opera(which I've set to delete private data). Opera didn't load the page and gave me a fraud warning. I decided to view the page anyway. It was a phishing page for the Facebook login page without 'Facebook' written anywhere. I know that many people would have tried to login. If you haven't got it yet, you are just giving away your login information by trying to log in. Probably if you try to login it sends a message to all your friends with the link to the phishing page.

I would advise all Facebook users to be careful. Don't visit any suspicious site with a .be domain and look at the page information and source(if you know a bit about web designing). Shift to a good browser like Firefox or Opera if you are using Internet Explorer. You can use a Phishing filter or some addon that warns you about phishing sites but you cautiousness is the best way protect yourself from Phishing scams.

If anyone has any questions or suggestions for Phishing protection you are encouraged to leave a comment and share it with all the readers of my blog.

ConsumerMate.com | Compare Laptops | Laptop Prices

May 26th, 2009 by Naman Bagga | 2 Comments | Filed in Reviews, Tech Talk

I am going to buy a laptop in a few days. I've started considering different options and configurations. This is a long process as there are hundreds of options to chose from. While buying a laptop you'll also want to get it at the best price. Asking retailers for prices manually makes it very difficult to get the best deal. I recently came across a website called ConsumerMate.com that makes comparing laptops simpler. Here's a short review of the site-

ConsumerMate.com is a new website launched by the 9.9 Media group. Currently it offers comparison on laptops only but as the name of the site suggests, other categories of products will be added soon. The site offers a simple search feature that shortlists laptops on the basis on brand, price, screen size and weight. You can then view the list of shortlisted laptops with their price and test center ratings. The test ratings are provided by Digit test center. You can then compare the shortlisted laptops. You can also get good price offers through the site. Just leave your contact details on the site and 2 to 3 dealers from your city will contact you quoting their price for the laptop you want.

The site also has an advanced search called Laptop Guru which helps you shortlist laptops through a wizard that asks you about your needs. The Hot Deals section can get you the best laptop prices and some great deals from online merchants. ConsumerMate.com is currently in its beta phase but it can be really useful to get the best deals on laptop computers. Once it comes out of beta, it can prove to be the ultimate guide for a consumer. ConsumerMate has the potential to be next successful 9.9 media project.
