LINUX: THE DARK HORSE

I hadn’t heard much about Linux until my friend Ankur Banerjee told me about it. He’s a proud Linux user and soon I’ll become one too. I’ve just place an order for my CD of the latest OS Ubuntu 7.04(Feisty Fawn) which works on a Linux platform. After knowing about Linux in detail, I decided to publicize it a bit as I feel it isn’t getting much publicity.

I’ll start from the very basic definition for amateurs to understand what I’m talking about. Linux is an Operating System (like windows). It is much more secure than Windows XP or Windows Vista which claim to be the safest Operating Systems. If you’ve ever come across a book on hacking, all hackers have a common opinion that security and Microsoft never go together. All books say that a system running on windows is the easiest to hack. It is a well known fact that an unprotected system running on Windows can be hacked in 10 minutes if it’s online.

Linux has many salient features. According to me one of the greatest assets of Linux is that there is nothing such as a virus for a Linux system. Thus you don’t need any anti-virus if you are running on a Linux system. The reason is that no file can install itself in a Linux system as Super-Administrator rights are required which are impossible to obtain for malware.

One of the reasons why I’m shifting to Linux is that I’m fed up of Microsoft and all the fuss about ownership of Genuine Windows XP. All important updates I download check for the genuineness of my genuine Windows XP. What’s the point of checking it again and again? I have statistics which say that more than 80% users of Internet Explorer 6.0 haven’t upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0 due to complicated procedure involved.

Linux offers respite from this fuss about genuine OS as it is a free software. Moreover, it is absolutely legal to copy and distribute Linux to your family and friends. Linux uses Mozilla Firefox as its default web browser which is much better than Microsoft Internet Explorer. As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts Mozilla Firefox is an award winning browser.

Some other advantages offered by Linux are that it uses better software. Linux comes preloaded with archivers which can handle archives of all formats. It uses Open Office which has more features than Microsoft Office and can handle more file formats. The latest version of Microsoft Office uses 4 letter extensions in place of the traditional 3 letter extensions like .doc, .ppt, .mdb etc. The latest version of Open Office which is included in Ubuntu is compatible with the new 4 letter extensions too. On the other hand, if you are using an older version of Microsoft Office you won’t be able to work with the new 4 letter extensions without downloading the compatibility pack offered by Microsoft.

If you’ve ever loaded Windows on your system you might know that it takes a minimum of 30 minutes to install Windows. On the other hand, Linux takes just 13 minutes for installation.

I’m sure that after reading this you would be convinced that Linux is clearly the dark horse which is much better than Windows which always remains in the spotlight.
You can get your own copy of Ubuntu 7.04 delivered to you for free. Just click on the link below to order your free CD.

DOWNLOAD VIDEOS FROM YOUTUBE

Many people know that it is very much possible to download videos from You Tube and other popular video sites. Today I am going to describe a simple way to do so. So if you want to learn the easiest way to do so I’m going to tell you.

First of all I recommend you to use Mozilla Firefox as downloading videos is not possible if you are using Internet Explorer. So look for an advertisement saying- ‘Get Firefox with Google Toolbar for more secure browsing’ at the top of the window. Click it to start downloading Mozilla Firefox. After the download is complete you can proceed further.

Now that you have downloaded Mozilla Firefox, I assume you are viewing this page through Firefox. You now need to download an add-on from the link below eg- Video Downloader, Get Video or Download Embedded. It would take less than two seconds to do so. Now you will be asked to restart Firefox. So you may restart it after reading this post and doing everything else.

Now the video you download will be in .flv format. So you need an flv encoder like Riva which you can get from the link below.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD RIVA FLV ENCODER

Now if you wish to convert the video to other forms like .mpeg, .mpg etc you should download Xilisoft video converter from the link below.

Now you may restart Firefox and return to this page for further instructions.

Go to the page containing the video to be downloaded. You will see an icon of the add-on on the status bar. Click it to start downloading the video.

MY LONGEST CLASS AT VMC

I had a nice day today as I had to skip school for a class at Vidyamandir Classes (VMC) at
10:30am. The class was held to discuss and complete the topics-Hydrocarbons and Organic Chemistry. We were taught by Bade Bhaiya (Mr. Brijmohan Gupta) who as usual inspired me a lot. The class lasted 6 hours and 30 minutes but we got a 30 minutes break. Thus effectively the class lasted for 6 hours. The class started like any other class. After 3 hours at 1:30am, a lunch break of 30 minutes was given. So I went to McDonalds which was nearby to have a snack. The class resumed at 2:00pm at I didn’t feel any difficulty. I like to call Bade Bhaiya ‘Big B’ as he always makes students feel comfortable and motivates us to study. The class was over by 5:00pm
and I didn’t feel any pain or problems as classrooms at VMC are equipped with speakers for the teacher’s microphone and 4 split Air Conditioners. I was a nice experience and I expect longer classes in the near future. The most amazing feature of the class was that Bade Bhaiya aged 44 taught us for 6 hours and didn’t even sit for a second. Classes at VMC as I’ve mentioned before are fun and it is a great experience to be a part of VMC. I’m uploading a photo of Bade Bhaiya-the great man. All I can say that it was great fun.

WORLD CUP UPDATE

The moment of truth has finally arrived.Everyone knows by now that the ICC World cup 2007 Final is going to be contested between Australia and Sri Lanka on Saturday.I would regard this as a close match but my odds would go 60-40 in favor of Australia. While typing this post I've suddenly realized that the last 2 Finals like this one have been Australia vs Sub-Continental team(Pakistan in 1999,India in 2003 and Sri Lanka in 2007).According to these trends Australia should register a comfortable win against Sri Lanka in the finals as they did against against Pakistan and India .On the other hand it would be a favor to the cricketing world if Sri Lanka end Australia's winning streak and get there 2nd world cup to make the game more interesting and unpredictable. What will happen?Who'll get the cup? We'll find out on Saturday. The best part is you can sleep late to watch the match as it's on Saturday. So cancel all your Schedules and watch the Final live at 5:00pm at SET MAX and have a good time.Come play!!!

VMC: TEST SERIES 4 (TS4)

Vidyamandir Classes organized Test Series 4 for its IITJEE2008 batch on Sunday 22nd April. Still I managed to post yesterday. The test as usual was held at 2 centers namely SD Public School and Father Agnels School. I went to SD Public school as usual and expected the usual 2 papers of 150 marks each summing up to 300.

At 9:30am,when paper1 started, I was shocked to see that paper 1 carried a weightage of 225 (75 each for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). All questions had just one correct answer and carried 3 marks each. Thus, there were 75 questions. Negative marking as usual was –1 per wrong answer (including matrix match type questions).

Paper 2 carried 240 marks (4 marks per question for 60 questions). Overall, the test carried 465 marks (155 for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics each). The paper was easier than TS3 which shows similarity between JEE 2007 and TS4 although it was not as easy as JEE 2007.

Chemical Kinetics, Chemical Equilibrium, Ionic Equilibrium, States of matter and Metallurgy were the key topics in Chemistry. The Physics section was filled with questions from Properties of Matter and thermodynamics. Optics carried very less weightage as there were around 5-6 questions. Mathematics was easier than ever as I attempted 14/20 questions in Paper 2 and 16/25 questions in paper 1. The test is open online till 24th April 10:00pm thus online results are expected in around 4 days.

FREE GAME:ICY TOWER

Icy tower is one of my favorite freewares. Its a cute game in which a guy called Harold(played by the user) tries to climb up a very high tower without falling down. The objective of the game is to reach as high as possible and in the process grab maximum number of points.Your points not only depend upon how high you reach but they also depend upon you speed and the number of combo jumps you make. Its a very popular game and I would rate it ****1/2(4.5/5).This is the only game I play which is liked by everyone in my family-my mom,my dad and my elder sister.I would like to give you a tip- go to the game options window and turn eye candy and sounds on for a good playing experience.

GAME REVIEW: F1 2002

The EA Sports F1 2002 is one of the best F1 games released by Electronic Arts. The best part is that the controls are simple and the handling of the cars is good. Since it was made in 2002 the old qualifying rules are used and new driver like Fernando Alonso are not included in the game. Teams like Arrows, Minardi (today’s Torro Rosso Crosworth ) and Jordan (today’s Spyker Racing team) are included in this version. But that doesn’t hamper the joy and concentration involved in playing the game. New circuits like Sakhir in Bahrain, the one at Shanghai (China) and the circuit at Istanbul, Turkey are not included in the game. The Game Menu-

The game comes with a telemetry feature, which gives you all telemetry data for your car on a particular lap including fuel load, tire tread and brake temperatures. The game is very close to real F1 racing as you can enable damage on accidents, fuel consumption and tire wear. The car handling turns horrible when your tires develop blisters and your car spins a lot in this case. You can enjoy racing simulation with cockpit and inner cockpit view. You can enhance your game play by changing audio to pit radio and by increasing the speech content. This is a good game if you are a true F1 fan. You can also capture some screenshots by pressing F12 key.

Screen shots from the game-

This game is one of my most favorite games. I play this game for hours and recommend it to all F1 fans. My rating for F1 2002 undoubtedly will be ***** (5/5). Sorry guys but this game is too big for me to give you a direct download link so you can get the game trial version from the link below

FREE GAME: MORTAR MAYHEM

I want to clarify that I’ll mostly be describing games which are not much popular and have a small size so that they are easy to get
.I'll also provide links to freeware games. For broken download links you can contact me at namanbagga@gmail.com. Today I’m going to describe Mortar Mayhem which is a super-hit game at school which I and my friends play in our computer lab during our practical classes when we’ve done all C++ programs for the day.

It’s an interesting game which involves combination of strategy and vision. All you have to do is destroy your opponents’ tanks by firing mortars and missiles at their tanks at a particular angle and with a particular power. You thus earn money on the basis of your performance with which you can buy weapons like ‘Big One’ and MNW (Multiple nuclear warhead) which can cause devastation to your opponents’ tanks. You may even buy armors and magnetic shields to ward off your opponents’ missiles and other weapons which they use. Overall I would rate this game 4.2/5.

This time I am providing a download link to the game.Just click to start download. Its a zip file of 279KB.

BLOGGING: IT’S FUN

It’s fun. These are the two words my friend Ankur Banerjee (GQ) said to me when I was hesitant about creating this blog. Well now with 14 posts I too believe that blogging is fun. I would like to tell all of you that blogging is simple if you have elementary knowledge of computers. There are some sites that make blogging very simple. I want to name a few today as I came across them while surfing.

Tumblr- http://www.tumblr.com

Senduit- http://www.senduit.com

StorySquared- http://www.storysquared.com

Duh- http://www.duhcorp.com

WordPress- http://www.wordpress.com

The purpose of blogging is fun and not complications. So if you want to create a blog and your knowledge of computers is less/elementary you should consider these sites to create your blog for more comfort.

MY SHORTEST CLASS AT VMC

It happened on Sunday when I had a class for the topic Parabola. The class started like any other class. By the end of two hours, it seemed as if the class was over and it was actually over in two hours! However, to make it look normal we did some simple questions and results as fillers. Officially, the class lasted 2hours and 20 minutes. Now let me tell that classes at VMC are fun and nobody waits for the class to end so it came much as a shock and not as something nice. This was something that was never expected to happen. Well there was just one thing good about it which was that I got to watch the Bahrain Grand Prix live.

FERRARI ONE-THREE AT BAHRAIN

As I wrote in one of my posts, Ferrari did dominate at Bahrain with Felipe Massa winning the race followed by Kimi Raikkonen at 3rd position. After McLaren dominated at Malaysia, it was Ferrari’s turn this time. Felipe Massa was determined to protect what he lost last week at Kuala Lampur (Malaysia). Massa got Ferrari their 100th pole position on Saturday and doubled his joy by converting his pole to a race win 10 days before his 26th birthday. Massa was clearly a class apart this weekend. Lewis Hamilton, the McLaren newcomer managed a 2nd place position. One of the most important feature of the race was engine failures witnessed by Takuma Sato, David Coulthard and Antony Davidson to name a few. Antony Davidson showed that he is a rookie by driving on the racing line when his engine blew up spilling oil on the track. Lewis Hamilton has managed 2 2nd places and 1 3rd place making him the leader in terms of championship points but I feel it’s too early to be talking about points. The day was made for me when I heard the Italian national anthem when Felipe Massa was standing on the top step of the podium

GAME REVIEW: POKEMON RED

I’ve decided to post reviews to some of the games I play or have on my PC. I’ll be writing about the games and describing them briefly. I promise to present a neutral opinion towards the game. If you want the game for free write to me at namanbagga@gmail.com and I’ll send you instructions regarding getting the game. To start today I want to describe Pokemon Red (Nintendo Game Boy edition) RPG. Although the graphics aren’t too great, this game is one of the most interesting RPG (Role Playing Games) I’ve ever played. I couldn’t find a better Pokemon RPG. It’s fun to play and keeps you hooked to the computer for hours. I would recommend it to people of age group 11-25. But take care it’s meant for gameboy so check the controls before playing, save the game from file menu and not within the game. And please Enter (Return) key is the pause button and beware Escape key (Esc) is the exit button. If you press the Esc key before saving the game, your game will be lost. Thus I would advise you to regularly make backups of your save files. My rating for this game would be **** (4/5).

MASSA CLINCHES ANOTHER POLE

News from Bahrain GP qualifying as just watched by Naman Bagga the Sports Fan is that Ferrari and McLaren dominated qualifying as usual as Felipe Massa got his 2nd pole position of the season and the 5th of his career. Ferrari clearly had an edge over the rest of the pack in terms of performance. Jean Todt had a smile on his face at the end of the session as Massa and Kimi Raikkonen qualified 1st and 3rd respectively. I strongly feel that Ferrari will have an edge in tomorrow’s race in terms of strategy and technology. McLaren have the potential to fill up the third position on the podium as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso qualified 2nd and 4th respectively. Robert Kubica qualified 5th , ahead of Nick Hiedfeld. Nico Rosberg who has racing in his blood and Mark Webber qualified 7th and 8th respectively. Giancarlo Fisichella struggled with his Renault and could manage a 9th position on the grid for Sunday’s race. Jarno Trulli just managed to get into the top 10 as he will start the race from 10th position on the 5th row. I’m looking forward to Sunday’s race. By the way it would be shown on ESPN at 16:00 IST and 17:30 Hong Kong time.

Bahrain Grand Prix: A Pre race Analysis

The Bahrain Grand Prix will be held this weekend. I’ll be reporting about the qualifying and the race on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Watch out for the Ferraris this weekend, I feel they will dominate this weekend. McLaren will also be a team to watch out for. Fernando Alonso or Hamilton can be one of the podium finishers. The temperature is expected to be high at the Sakhir circuit so it will be a tough race for the drivers and tire choice as expected will be crucial for the drivers. I personally will be supporting the Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. If you are in India I would expect qualifying to start at 16:30 at Star Sports on Saturday and the race day on Sunday same time, same channel.

Free Turbo C++ Compilers

If you have problems finding a C++ compiler you are not the only one. Even I had trouble finding one. So I decided to upload it on my blog. Its a 2.5MB download. Its very useful if you are a computer science student of class 11 or 12. Just take care that you mention the extension .cpp in your file name while saving it. I use this version myself so its a nice version. You can also download visual C++.

IIT-JEE 2007

Past Sunday, IITJEE 2007 was held and about 2.5lac students appeared for it. The paper was easier than usual and no questions had more than one answer except the 6 mark matrix match type questions, which had no negative marking associated with them. However, children realized later that some of the questions were tricky and they had made some mistakes leading to negative marks. The cut-offs are expected to rise this year to 40-45/162 in Physics, 55-60/162 in Mathematics and 50-55/162 in Chemistry. Overall, the cut-off would range from 175-180/486. The paper was quite theoretical and very few calculations were involved. Obviously, what I’ve told you about the paper is insufficient so you may have a look at it and may download it from the links below. I would like to thank Ankur Banerjee for providing me the papers. I would like to clarify that these papers with solutions were downloaded from Career Launcher’s website thus I don’t hold any responsibility for any printing errors or any incorrect solutions. Feel free to download these papers of size 711KB and 841KB respectively, they are not subject to any copyright restrictions.

You might have to right click on the link and select Save Link As option to start download if it doesn't start by just clicking it.

VMC:VIDYAMANDIR CLASSES

I am a student of Vidyamandir Classes (VMC) which is one of the best institutes for IIT-JEE preparation. It effectively has just one centre at Punjabi Bagh in New Delhi. Today I want to tell you something about VMC (I’ll be using the abbreviation very often so make it clear that I’m talking about Vidyamandir Classes).VMC is run by three brothers namely Brijmohan Gupta (Bade Bhaiya), Shyammohan Gupta (Physics wale Bhaiya) and Manmohan Gupta (Munna Bhaiya). These three are pioneers in their work and are teaching IIT-JEE aspirants for quite some time. They teach Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics respectively. Another important figure for VMC is Mr. Sandeep Mehta who is very popularly known as Sandeep Bhaiya. At VMC everyone is called Bhaiya (brother) and there is no mention of the word ‘sir’.

Admission to VMC is on the basis of a challenging admission test. More than 10,000 students appear for the test from which about 480 are selected for admission to the classroom courses namely-

  1. Regular Classroom Course (RCC)
  2. Extended Classroom Course (ECC)

240 students are selected for admission to both of these courses. I won’t describe the Correspondence course offered by VMC as it is not a classroom course. Now I’ll briefly describe RCC and ECC.

The top 240 students are selected for RCC and are taught by the three brothers mentioned above. In addition to that, some topics are taught to them by the teachers of ECC. A batch of RCC contains 60 students and classes are held once in a week.

The ranks 240-480 are selected for ECC and are taught by IITans from VMC. An ECC group contains about 30 students and classes are held twice a week.

Classes at VMC are a wonderful experience. A class generally lasts 3 hours but sometimes it may last 4-5 hours. In each class at least 30 minutes are spent in motivating students and in telling them how to study. The classrooms have comfortable chairs, a white board and at least 1 split Air conditioner. 24 hour power backup is available at the study centers. There is one last salient feature which I would like to tell you about. It’s the use of multiple color markers while teaching which makes learning easier. VMC always focuses on the psychological factors related to examinations and I believe that is what the key to success of VMCITES is.

MOZILLA FIREFOX:A MUST HAVE

Mozilla Firefox is the ultimate solution to the web browsing problems suffered by people using Internet Explorer. I got sick and tired of updating my Internet explorer from version 5 to 6 and then to version 7. I would recommend it to all my friends who want to make browsing fun. Firefox is an award winning web browser. The latest Mozilla Firefox 2 is one of the fastest web browsers. My rating for it will be ***** (5/5). What’s even better is that it is absolutely free of cost and when I say free I mean free. It’s a 5MB download which means that if you are using DSL/Cable/Broadband you are less than 5 minutes away from the greatest browsing experience. Well I haven’t told you one thing yet-Where do you download it from??Hmm…The answer is very simple-my blog where else. Look for a Firefox advertisement on the right panel of this page. All you have to do is click on it and download Firefox. So friends, happy browsing.

MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX

FROM SEPANG
Hi buddies. It was really disappointing and disturbing to see Fernando Alonso of McLaren lead Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix all the way, until the checkered flag was waved. Well I’m a die-hard Ferrari fan and even own a community on orkut named Jean Todt rocks. Hamilton who was competing in his 2nd Formula One Grand Prix got a podium finish behind his teammate Alonso. He was 2nd. Finnish Driver Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari managed to get a podium finish 20 seconds behind Alonso and a fraction behind Hamilton. Raikkonen couldn’t repeat his win at Albert Park in Melbourne tree weeks ago. Ferrari’s 2nd driver Felipe Massa could just manage a 5th position. McLaren have now thrown Ferrari on their back foot in the constructors’ championship, as Sunday’s one-two finish was the first for McLaren since 2005. The next GP is at Bahrain but one thing’s for sure I’ll post regarding the qualifying and the race.

MASSA CLINCHES POLE

Felipe Massa clinched pole position for todays Malaysian Grand Prix

Felipe Massa believes that Ferrari have all the right ingredients to go forward and secure the world championship this season but insists it will be a challenge.

The Brazilian driver said despite his gearbox problem in Australia, the domination by team-mate Kimi Räikkönen and the pace set at last week’s test at Sepang, has left him with little doubts.

“I have seen all the recent media speculation following Melbourne that this year’s championship is going to be easy for Ferrari,” he said. “It's not true of course, but I do have a good car.

“As usual, the important thing for this weekend will be to put everything together, all the elements you need to win, and we do have those elements.

“The competition is very strong and so it will be very difficult, but looking at what we did in Australia and also last week in Sepang, we are looking very strong ourselves,” he stressed.

“In the first race we managed to win but we had a reliability problem with the other car, so the obvious next step is to be in a position to have both cars at the front,” he said.

“And that's not easy, but we have a good team and a good package and everyone is working very hard. I am confident we will be very strong again this weekend.”
