LINUX: THE DARK HORSE

April 30th, 2007 by Naman Bagga | No Comments | Filed in Linux, Tech Talk

I hadn’t heard much about Linux until my friend Ankur Banerjee told me about it. He’s a proud Linux user and soon I’ll become one too. I’ve just place an order for my CD of the latest OS Ubuntu 7.04(Feisty Fawn) which works on a Linux platform. After knowing about Linux in detail, I decided to publicize it a bit as I feel it isn’t getting much publicity.

I’ll start from the very basic definition for amateurs to understand what I’m talking about. Linux is an Operating System (like windows). It is much more secure than Windows XP or Windows Vista which claim to be the safest Operating Systems. If you’ve ever come across a book on hacking, all hackers have a common opinion that security and Microsoft never go together. All books say that a system running on windows is the easiest to hack. It is a well known fact that an unprotected system running on Windows can be hacked in 10 minutes if it’s online.

Linux has many salient features. According to me one of the greatest assets of Linux is that there is nothing such as a virus for a Linux system. Thus you don’t need any anti-virus if you are running on a Linux system. The reason is that no file can install itself in a Linux system as Super-Administrator rights are required which are impossible to obtain for malware.

One of the reasons why I’m shifting to Linux is that I’m fed up of Microsoft and all the fuss about ownership of Genuine Windows XP. All important updates I download check for the genuineness of my genuine Windows XP. What’s the point of checking it again and again? I have statistics which say that more than 80% users of Internet Explorer 6.0 haven’t upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0 due to complicated procedure involved.

Linux offers respite from this fuss about genuine OS as it is a free software. Moreover, it is absolutely legal to copy and distribute Linux to your family and friends. Linux uses Mozilla Firefox as its default web browser which is much better than Microsoft Internet Explorer. As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts Mozilla Firefox is an award winning browser.

Some other advantages offered by Linux are that it uses better software. Linux comes preloaded with archivers which can handle archives of all formats. It uses Open Office which has more features than Microsoft Office and can handle more file formats. The latest version of Microsoft Office uses 4 letter extensions in place of the traditional 3 letter extensions like .doc, .ppt, .mdb etc. The latest version of Open Office which is included in Ubuntu is compatible with the new 4 letter extensions too. On the other hand, if you are using an older version of Microsoft Office you won’t be able to work with the new 4 letter extensions without downloading the compatibility pack offered by Microsoft.

If you’ve ever loaded Windows on your system you might know that it takes a minimum of 30 minutes to install Windows. On the other hand, Linux takes just 13 minutes for installation.

I’m sure that after reading this you would be convinced that Linux is clearly the dark horse which is much better than Windows which always remains in the spotlight.

DOWNLOAD VIDEOS FROM YOUTUBE

April 28th, 2007 by Naman Bagga | No Comments | Filed in Tech Talk, Videos

Many people know that it is very much possible to download videos from You Tube and other popular video sites. Today I am going to describe a simple way to do so. So if you want to learn the easiest way to do so I’m going to tell you.

First of all I recommend you to use Mozilla Firefox as downloading videos is not possible if you are using Internet Explorer. So look for an advertisement saying- ‘Get Firefox with Google Toolbar for more secure browsing’ at the top of the window. Click it to start downloading Mozilla Firefox. After the download is complete you can proceed further.

Now that you have downloaded Mozilla Firefox, I assume you are viewing this page through Firefox. You now need to download an add-on from the link below eg- Video Downloader, Get Video or Download Embedded. It would take less than two seconds to do so. Now you will be asked to restart Firefox. So you may restart it after reading this post and doing everything else.

Now the video you download will be in .flv format. So you need an flv encoder like Riva which you can get from the link below.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD RIVA FLV ENCODER

Now if you wish to convert the video to other forms like .mpeg, .mpg etc you should download Xilisoft video converter from the link below.

Now you may restart Firefox and return to this page for further instructions.

Go to the page containing the video to be downloaded. You will see an icon of the add-on on the status bar. Click it to start downloading the video.

MY LONGEST CLASS AT VMC

April 27th, 2007 by Naman Bagga | No Comments | Filed in IIT JEE, VMC:Vidyamandir Classes

I had a nice day today as I had to skip school for a class at Vidyamandir Classes (VMC) at
10:30am. The class was held to discuss and complete the topics-Hydrocarbons and Organic Chemistry. We were taught by Bade Bhaiya (Mr. Brijmohan Gupta) who as usual inspired me a lot. The class lasted 6 hours and 30 minutes but we got a 30 minutes break. Thus effectively the class lasted for 6 hours. The class started like any other class. After 3 hours at 1:30am, a lunch break of 30 minutes was given. So I went to McDonalds which was nearby to have a snack. The class resumed at 2:00pm at I didn’t feel any difficulty. I like to call Bade Bhaiya ‘Big B’ as he always makes students feel comfortable and motivates us to study. The class was over by 5:00pm
and I didn’t feel any pain or problems as classrooms at VMC are equipped with speakers for the teacher’s microphone and 4 split Air Conditioners. I was a nice experience and I expect longer classes in the near future. The most amazing feature of the class was that Bade Bhaiya aged 44 taught us for 6 hours and didn’t even sit for a second. Classes at VMC as I’ve mentioned before are fun and it is a great experience to be a part of VMC. I’m uploading a photo of Bade Bhaiya-the great man. All I can say that it was great fun.

WORLD CUP UPDATE

April 26th, 2007 by Naman Bagga | No Comments | Filed in Cricket

The moment of truth has finally arrived.Everyone knows by now that the ICC World cup 2007 Final is going to be contested between Australia and Sri Lanka on Saturday.I would regard this as a close match but my odds would go 60-40 in favor of Australia. While typing this post I've suddenly realized that the last 2 Finals like this one have been Australia vs Sub-Continental team(Pakistan in 1999,India in 2003 and Sri Lanka in 2007).According to these trends Australia should register a comfortable win against Sri Lanka in the finals as they did against against Pakistan and India .On the other hand it would be a favor to the cricketing world if Sri Lanka end Australia's winning streak and get there 2nd world cup to make the game more interesting and unpredictable. What will happen?Who'll get the cup? We'll find out on Saturday. The best part is you can sleep late to watch the match as it's on Saturday. So cancel all your Schedules and watch the Final live at 5:00pm at SET MAX and have a good time.Come play!!!
